POTD Stuff
24th October 2007

More stuff for POTD.

Spent a bit of time uploading over a month's worth of photos for the site's Photo a day section. And I have another dozen or so ready.

It's been a busy week so far for taking photos - I've taken 400 shots since Monday - but, alas, all for work. That's gonna change next week because we're off to Cornwall for a week - WOOOOOHOOOOO!

We had an interesting lecture at Wigan Photographic Society last night - all about the science behind colour. Interesting stuff - but VERY complex!

A couple of shots I took this morning...

Fun with Fungi

I had a wander about round the Hall Lane and Canal bits of Haigh Hall this afternoon looking for Fungi to photograph.

Sunday - hoping to get out
21st October 2007

I may escape to take photos today!

Looks like a lovely day out there today. I've got family stuff to do this morning but if the weather stays nice I may get up to The Lakes  later for some landscape photography. Autumn colours should be out up there by now so maybe a walk along Loughrigg Terrace to Grassmere or a mooch about the shores of Derwent Water.

Watch this space!

New Galleries

I now have galleries for Butterflies and Dragonflies - do you like them? If so please comment on a pic or two :)

Competition success
20th October 2007

Wigan Photographic Society Annual Dinner last night.

A good bit of jackbit with like-minded chaps and chapesses - plus the awards for the year.

I came home with the following for my efforts this year...

  • The Record Cup - for best record and natural history print
  • The Wilkinson Cup - for best Landscape EPI (Projected image)
  • The People's Choice Cup - for best print at the Annual Exhibition at the History Shop
  • Plus a Commended, Highly Commended and two Very Highly Commended award cards.

Not a bad haul for my first season at the club.

All we have to do now is figure out where to put these cups and shields - they're huge!

Wigan Photographic Society Trophies

Two more photo galleries for you too - Zoo animals and the East Lancs Railway. If you see a shot you like, please comment, otherwise there's not much point me putting more up. Ta :)

Friday - weekend is almost here!

As promised there's now a big gallery of bird photos - and I've stuck some up from Appleby Horse Fair too.

Tonight is the Wigan Photographic Society Annual Dinner at the Rose and Crown in Worthington. A nice meal and presentation of awards from this year's annual exhibition. I should be coming home with a few shiney trophies :)

Six galleries for your pleasure
18th October 2007

There are now 6 galleries in my blog.

I'm trying to resist the temptation to upload too many shots - I have thousands!

If anyone has any requests - just yell and I'll see what I've got.

I plan to add a BIRDS gallery tonight.

If you see a shot you like - please leave a comment - otherwise there's not much point me putting them up.

I wonder what the weather will bring today? Some nice blue skies would be nice

Monday Morning
15th October 2007

Wooooo - Monday Morning so soon?

Off to work again - I wonder what this week has in store? Any surprises? I hope so

A few photo shoots booked this week - just general work stuff, plus a community event in Atherton on Wednesday evening. Newsletters and leaflets to design - some backup, AV and font management issues to try to formulate.

Ok - off to work now. I'll leave you with another shot from Saturday...

The Manchester Wheel - I used a fisheye lens for this to try to accentuate the circular nature of the wheel. I think the black and white conversion works ok too. Taking away the colour lets you concentrate on what's going on in the scene.

Manchester City Centre - River Irwell
13th October 2007

I spent the afternoon in Manchester City centre today - a work job so I can't post the photos here.

However - I was surprised to see so much activity along the Irwell - right in the city centre behind Deansgate! These two shots were taken from the lower level of the multi-story car park.

The local waterfall

Fishing - right in the city centre!

Mustn't grumble
13th October 2007

Yes I MUST!!!!!

Weekend again and in comes the rain!

I've done a few photo shoots for work this week - and all in nice sunny weather with blue skies - but now it's weekend and I want to take photos for ME - it's raining and overcast.

Hopefully it will brighten up later or maybe tomorrow.

While I'm in moaning mode - why is it that many of the general public think that a man with a camera in a public place is automatically a pedophile? I was walking around Wigan town centre yesterday taking photos of the 1m square boxes and hanging baskets that have been replanted with winter plants. I was doing this officially - for the Town Centre Manager. I was wearing a shirt and tie and thought I looked fairly respectable - well for me anyway. I got verbally abused twice. Once by a bloke walking past with his wife who looked at me and then as he walked off said to her "Bloody perverts are everywhere now." A bit later a group of teenagers walked past and one asked what I wa staking photos of. Before I could comment he asked if I was taking photos of kids and they all had a good giggle. I won't repeat my reply here.

Public information bulletin: Being in possession of a camera does not make a person a pedophile!

Now then - if a person wanted to take discrete unseen photos of kids - would he stand in full view with a couple a grand's worth of professional camera gear? I think not.

Rant over - have a nice day

Well hello there!
11th October 2007

Well well - what's all this then? A WiganWorld Blog type thing! What a beltin' idea!

Ok - here we go...

About Oy

My name's Dave and I'm a Photographer & Graphic Designer from Wigan. I'll photograph anything that makes a good photo - and tend to go through phases of specialising in different types of photography depending on where I feel I need to improve the most. I also do the usual Wedding Photography amd Family Portrait stuff to help fund my addiction to expensive shiney Nikon items

I run an internet based camera club at www.shutternutters.co.uk   where many of the regular members are from in and around Wigan, but we also have members from as far away as Florida and Norway! We get together (to the pub!) once a month and have regular trips out. Recent forum trip locations have included the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Prague!

I'm also an active member of Wigan Photographic Society, where I compete in various competitions - I do ok too

Well - enouigh babble from me. Here is a small selection of my recent  photos...
