Cleansing Department
28th December 2007

Many thanks to Dave Green for loaning me more local material.

I have just uploaded 27 old photos, all related to the County Borough of Wigan's Cleansing Department.

Quite a few photos are unknown.

Any help would be appreciated, please leave a comment with the photo if you can help in any way.

Frog Lane Tip
24th December 2007

Many Thanks to Dave Green for loaning me an official souvenir booklet of the offical opening of the "New Cleansing Depot and Refuse Disposal Plant" (or tip for short) on Frog Lane.

The year? 1938 - I would never have guessed the place was that old. There are some great photos in the booklet, check out the last page, Wigan Workhouse can be made out in the background.

View the Frog Lane booklet.

Signing off now... Hope you all have a nice Christmas.

Websites
16th December 2007

I've moved the historyworld website and spent some time re-skinning it.

Will also be adding lots more content in the near future as its been neglected for too long! If anyone has any suggestions for new content, please let me know.

Will also be adding more album photos to wiganworld and moving the site too.

Just as an aside, and for a bit of fun, I have a terrific domain name that is just crying out for a site to be written. Think of this as an 'online brainstorm', lol. Please leave a comment and suggest what the new website could be about.

Here is the domain.....

www.sweetfa.co.uk

As in, sweet fanny adams (free?), sweet FA (football?), sweet shop?

Any ideas?

Not enough...
11th December 2007

... hours in a day!

Been out and about again when I should be moving files but there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything.

Been to June's house in Hindley Green for some old photos, mainly around the Ince area from the 1960s. Some crackers in there of Belle Green School and the area as well as walking days around Ince Bar. Keep an eye on the album for these, hope to add them within a couple of days. Thanks June.

Also got some unique photos of local historical finds from the area including armour, helmet and axe head. Someone has dated the helmet to the 100 Years' War (1337 onwards, Agincourt). It's possible these items may have been used in the Civil War. Fascinating stuff, all found in Wrightington.

There's so much going on I'm struggling to keep up, lol. Keep an eye out, everything I learn about locally or photos I receive will end up on wiganworld for all to see.

Moving
11th December 2007

I've moved most of my sites across and all is going well, so far.

Have about 6 more to do - wiganworld will be the last one to move. The problem with wiganworld is the sheer size of it. Around 3GB of data + 3 databases.

Will need to close this site, move stuff across and then re-activate the new one. I've already moved around 2GB of stuff but as the site is interactive the remainder will have to move in 1 chunk. Unfortunately there is no other way! If we disappear you know why. ;o)

Rest assured we will be back soon.

Hosting
5th December 2007

I've taken the plunge and ordered yet another server!

Over the next few days (or weeks) I will be moving all my sites again. Fingers crossed that the new server will live up to the expectations that it promises.

For anyone that may be remotely interested, or if there are any geeks out there here is the spec.

Many gigabytes of data and files need to be uploaded as well as moving domain names etc so some down-time will be unavoidable. I will move a couple of smaller sites first as a test in order to cause minimal disruption, lol.

Will post again before the 'move', as usual - watch this space...

Cemetery index
2nd December 2007

Reel 7 of the cemetery index has been added.

Thanks to Carole Lowton and Barbara Davies for compiling this reel. Over 9,000 names have been added.

The index now covers the period from Sept 1856 to June 1988 and contains 116,301 names.

Will be adding more features over time.

Watch this space...
