St George's Day
26th March 2008

St George's Walking Day ParadeThe end of an era. The St George's Day Parade is no more!

Why? Because the police have decided not to provide cover for the walks so that they can concentrate on fighting crime. Well, thats OK then, years of tradition down the drain for what?

The walk would cost £1,300 to arrange now. This, apparently, is not a problem as the sum could be paid by various fund-raising events.

The problem is that without the police, the walk would be dangerous, health and safety and all that malarkey!

Here is something for the authorities to ponder over......

wiganworld will pay the £1,300 in full so the walk can go ahead.

wiganworld will cough up a few extra quid to pay for a couple of bobbies to police the event, although I know a couple of policemen who have said they would voluntarily help to keep the walks alive.

Alternatiively, lets do the walks without the police. Why not? When the traffic comes to a standstill for an hour or so, I'm sure there will be more police turn up than ever!

What do you think?

Have your say here.

PS. I wonder if the Notting Hill Carnival will suffer the same fate?

Good progress...
24th March 2008

...Version 8is being made on the latest version of wiganworld, version 8.

If you have emailed me, please be patient, I'm plodding away updating everything, and I mean everything! Lots of new stuff on the way including a Wigan Streets section where anyone will be able to upload their own street photos.

The streets section is taking me a while though... I have to add every pic again, almost 6,000 of them. Lesson learnt, use a database from day 1 next time!

Improvements and additions to existing sections are also planned.

More soon.

18th March 2008

wiganworld v8wiganworld version 8 is on the way!

Crisper, cleaner and easier than ever to use and to navigate, with extra features and a more professional look'n'feel.

The resolution will be stepped up slightly and Ajax and other web2.0 tools will be used to make the site more interactive.

If you feel the site is missing something, now is your chance to let me know. Be it a 'free for all' photo section, more help with uploading pics, facebook style applications, google maps... the list is endless.

If you have any feedback please leave a comment or fire an email to brian@wiganworld.co.uk

Thanks.

Back soon
17th March 2008

Still busy as ever so haven't updated the site for a few days - I'll be back soon.

It's not all work for a change either - had a good night at Wigan Beer Festival, can't believe it was the 21st year. I was there at the first one and still have the pint glass 'First Beer at the Pier'. Showing my age now!

Cheers and beers, back soon...

Phew
10th March 2008

Well, the move to the new server is finally complete. There were a few issues but they've all been addressed.

I can now concentrate on updating again although you've been busy yourselves by the look of the album etc. Thank you.

Historyworld has had a few more updates, namely more adverts and 1960's fashion. I'll be adding more to that site and this one too soon, watch this space. ;o)

Another percent
3rd March 2008

Wigan StreetsThanks to Peter Frost for more street photos from around Hindley.

We are now 75% complete!

If your street (or a nearby street) hasn't been photographed yet and you have a digital camera, please pop out and take a few snaps. Email them to brian@wiganworld.co.uk with street name, your name and month taken and I'll add them to the streets section, thanks.
