Cemetery Index

Wigan Cemetery Index UpdatedFreda Chorlton has been working her magic again and I've added some more code to the Wigan Cemetery Index to bring 2 major new updates.

1. Due to Freda's hard work and determination, ALL records have a plot number. All 117,918 of them!

2. I've added a new feature that allows you to click a plot number and this will link to a new page which shows who else is buried in the same plot. Should be a useful tool for anyone doing their family research.

To see the new indexes in action:-

Take the image to the right, for example, search for Chipperfield and the plot number along with other details are displayed.

Click the plot number and the Cornish names and another name are displayed.

Just a few points to note:-

Information is provided in good faith based from records transcribed.

If lots of unexpected names appear, you could be viewing a public grave. An asterisk (*) usually indicates a public grave.

Thanks Freda.

Have you noticed that the first Sarah on the stone has had her surname inscribed as Corinsh instead of Cornish. Oooops!

Posted by Freda Chorlton on 24th October 2009 at 20:07
Trust you to spot it Carol, It still shows up as Cornish in the records.
That was the first thing I checked when I looked at this page on Wednesday.
It was the poor mason who got mixed up and just hoped no one would notice.
Hasn't Brian has done a brilliant job with the grave number links. I could play on it all day !!
I'm just sorry that I could not pick up on all the public graves, but if they were spread over two registers I had to give them the benefit of the doubt.
If anyone looks at a grave number without an asterisk * if there are unrelated names buried over a very short period then they can assume that it is a public grave.

There's always one isn't there! The link is excellent - also you have done a superb job and have saved a lot of people a lot of work. It was a bit of a trawl in the old days wasn't it!

I think they call it technology.

Congratulations on producing a brilliant family history resource for researchers who have Wigan family interests, as I do. I have found many relatives on my mother's side which would have taken me considerably longer, and I may not have found them at all, without this fantastic site. Thank you.
